Where can I learn about the RI HIE regulations and “opt out?”
The HIE regulations can be found on the State of Rhode Island’s website:
https://rules.sos.ri.gov/regulations/part/216-10-10-6
This excerpt defines the right of patients to “opt out":
6.1 “Patient participants shall be able to rescind permission for disclosure to health care providers via the HIE ("opt out") by signing an opt-out form provided by the HIE.”
Are there exceptions if I “opt out” of sharing my health information?
This excerpt from the HIE regulations defines the 3 exceptions where patients cannot “opt out” of sharing their health information:
6.3.1 (A)(3) “protected health information may be disclosed to:
a. Health care providers that care for them in emergencies, on a temporary basis;
b. Public health authorities in the process of carrying out their functions, pursuant to R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-37.7-7(b)(2); and
c. Health plans where information is necessary for care management, quality, and performance measure reporting.”
As Rhode Island's state-designated Health Information Exchange (HIE), CurrentCare is dedicated to connecting healthcare providers and patients through secure, streamlined health data sharing.
We support patient-centered care by ensuring providers have the vital information they need to deliver the best possible outcomes. Patients can feel confident knowing that their treating providers can securely access their information during routine care and emergency situations. Together, we’re building a healthier, more connected Rhode Island.
An HIE like CurrentCare plays a vital role in improving care coordination between healthcare providers and improving patient outcomes. In moments when you're unable to share important details, CurrentCare enables authorized healthcare providers to quickly access your medical history, including allergies and conditions that could affect your care.
CurrentCare can notify your primary care provider when you're admitted to the hospital, ensuring timely follow-up and seamless continuity of care. With access to past test results and lab reports, healthcare providers can make informed decisions, avoid unnecessary repeat tests, and reduce healthcare costs—saving you time and effort.
At CurrentCare, we are committed to making healthcare safer, more efficient, and cost-effective. Our mission is to support healthcare providers in delivering exceptional care while ensuring your health and peace of mind remain at the center of everything we do.
