Transition

In April 2025, CurrentCare is changing to both a new opt-out consent model and a new technology vendor.

This page will provide the most up-to-date information as it is available.

What will stay the same?

CurrentCare will continue to be Rhode Island’s state Health Information Exchange (HIE), and provide the healthcare community with the same valuable healthcare data.

Rhode Island Quality Institute (RIQI) is the State of RI’s designated Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO). RIQI will continue to support CurrentCare, including administrative, operational, and end-user support and training.

Provider organizations will continue to have similar services (access to clinical data and encounter notifications), plus additional services and benefits.

What is Changing?

In 2025, CurrentCare will receive a modern makeover. The consent model will be changing to increase the amount of patient data available in the HIE, which will benefit both the provider community and patients.

At the same time, CurrentCare is transitioning to new technology, which will provide the healthcare community with exciting new capabilities today, as well as increased possibilities for the future.

New HIE Regulations:
  • CurrentCare’s consent model will change from “opt in” to “opt out” of data sharing.
  • RIQI will provide an opt-out form in various formats and languages.
  • All data sharing partners must inform patients about the changes to the consent model and educate patients about their options.
  • Read more about Opt Out: CurrentCareRI.org/Patients
New Technology Vendor:
  • HIE technology will be managed by CRISP Shared Services (CSS), an experienced HIE vendor with a growing national network of participating states, including Connecticut.
  • Rhode Island will benefit from and contribute to the CSS collaborative of states, that share technical infrastructure, new projects, ideas for innovation, and more.
Changes to Provider Features:
  • Single Sign-On App is available as a core feature within many Electronic Health Records (EHRs), including Epic, Cerner, PointClickCare, Meditech, athena, eClinicalWorks, NextGen.
  • Encounter Notification Services will now be free of charge and available in multiple formats.
  • Except for Epic users, Care Management Alerts via Direct Messaging will no longer be supported. RIQI is working with each organization to identify replacement service(s).
  • Hospitals can now elect for CurrentCare to send Facility-Identified Alerts on their behalf to primary care providers via direct messaging, free of charge
Changes to Patient-Facing Features:
  • Patients will have peace of mind knowing that their network of healthcare providers will have access to their clinical data from multiple organizations and can choose to receive notifications when they’ve had emergency room or hospital visits.
  • The CurrentCare for Me (CC4Me) Patient Portal will be sunset on April 30, 2025. Read more here.
  • CC4Me Designee Alerts (email and text notifications to designees about encounters involving CC4Me-enrolled patients) will be sunset on April 30, 2025.
  • Patients are encouraged to provide feedback about CurrentCare for Me by completing this survey.

What is the Timeline?

Currently:  Most data sharing partners are in the process of sending their data into the new CurrentCare platform. The CurrentCare team is reaching out to all existing CurrentCare and Care Management users to plan for the move to the new platform.

April 1-30, 2025:  Clinical users will start using the new CurrentCare Portal, where one login gives access to many applications. Encounter Notifications will begin [as hospitals begin sending them].

April 30, 2025:  RIQI’s existing CurrentCare infrastructure will be sunset. All patient and provider access will be turned off. Provider organizations will need to have access to the new platform to view clinical data and receive encounter notifications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What if we don’t think our organization can meet the April 30th deadline?

The platform is planned to sunset on April 30, 2025, and there is currently no flexibility in that timeline. Patients will lose their access to CurrentCare for Me. Providers and clinical users who haven’t migrated to the new system will lose their access.

If you have questions about how to meet this deadline, please contact the CurrentCare team at Support@CurrentCareRI.org or 888.858.4815. We are here to help you!

As a provider organization, what can I do while I wait for the legal contract(s) to be signed?

There is quite a bit you can do! You can meet with the CurrentCare team to learn about the transition, the products, the new workflows and the decisions that will be needed. You can create a panel file using the new template, and create a workflow to ensure it is updated regularly.

What is the difference between our existing Care Management Alerts and Dashboards (CMAD) and CRISP Shared Services (CSS) tools, and will there be any costs?

CMAD will be transitioned to the new CurrentCare platform and the service will then be free of charge (set-up and maintenance). RIQI is working with each of our current users to describe what features will be the same and what will be different in the new CSS platform.

The new CurrentCare Portal will include both Viewing Clinical Information (formerly Viewer) and Encounter Notifications: Population Explorer (formerly Dashboard):
